A 21-year-old Syrian asylum seeker signs a marriage certificate before the vice-mayor of Lesvos. Her application to marry her partner was initially rejected by the Municipality of Lesvos, due to her inability to provide a certificate of celibacy and a birth certificate. HIAS Greece successfully argued that in view of her ruptured relationship with her country of origin, failure to produce such documentation should not stand in the way of receiving a marriage license.

Of the nearly half a million Greeks who have emigrated from the country since 2008, more than 50 percent—at least 213,500—are relatively young, between the ages of 25 and 39. Unlike in prior decades, college graduates are not going abroad with the mindset of ultimately returning to Greece. Many are leaving Greece without looking back.
